Small, local and friendly

Weekly mat classes at Finchley Youth Theatre and Gospel Oak Methodist Church. No equipment needed, mats provided, and you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

Calm you take home

Calm you take home

Breath work, stillness and sound sit alongside the movement. Members talk about better sleep, less back pain and steadier days, not just stronger cores.

The basics

What are Pilates and yoga?

New to all of this? Here's the short version. No jargon, no prior experience needed.

  • Mat Pilates

Controlled, low-impact floor work that strengthens your core and frees your back. No machines and no equipment needed, just a mat, which is provided.

  • Yoga & Pilates Fusion

Movement and breath together. Yoga's stretch and stillness with Pilates' strength, in one evening hour.

  • Sound & stillness

Gong baths and soundbaths: you lie down, wrapped up warm, and let sound do the unwinding. Added regularly as events, all welcome.

Not sure which class to start with?

If your back or posture is the thing you want to fix, start with Mat Pilates. If you want to stretch out and switch off after work, the Wednesday Fusion class is the one. And if you just need to properly rest, watch for the next gong bath. Whichever you pick, your first class is free and Lucie will adapt it to you.

Lucie Ormerod

25+ years in wellbeing · East Finchley studio since 2008

Lucie has been teaching yoga and Pilates in North London for over 25 years, and has run her own bright and airy East Finchley studio since 2008. Her classes are small, friendly and adapted to every body in the room, through injuries, pregnancies and everything in between.

She trained across Pilates (Pilates Institute Diploma and Advanced), yoga (200-hour Akhanda training in Rishikesh, Vinyasa Flow, Kundalini and accessible chair yoga) and therapies (aromatherapy since 1993, reflexology). She has delivered NHS wellbeing retreats since 2020, given aromatherapy at the Marie Curie Hospice, and been featured in The Telegraph and as Pilates Union's Instructor of the Month.

It is not always easy to stay calm and relaxed living in a busy city and through movement and breath work we can help our bodies and mind feel better.

Retreats

Do you crave a weekend away?

A few times a year Urban Calm leaves London for Tofte Manor, a 17th-century house in 50 acres of Bedfordshire gardens, with an outdoor pool, a fire pit, a grass labyrinth for quiet reflection and a yurt for gong baths. A weekend of yoga, Pilates, meditation and food cooked for you, from £595.

Guests call it “a real re-set weekend in a sanctuary away from the pressures of life.” The next one runs 18-20 September 2026, and when you're ready for the big escape, there are retreats in Barbados too.

A member's story

Twenty years of moving well

C Goodhart came to Lucie as a local looking to stay mobile. Twenty years on she is still in class, with the Pilates quietly adapted each year as her body changed, and massage for the aches along the way.

Her story is what Urban Calm does: not transformations, but two decades of being kept moving by someone who pays attention.

I have the greatest confidence in Lucie. She has been like a guardian angel in my life over about 20 years to keep me moving with pilates cleverly adapted to suit my growing immobility. Also soothing my aches and pains with massage; not to mention friendship and advice.
